Who Needs Care?

In 2021, 278,946 people aged 65+ were living in care homes in England and Wales.
This represents 2.5% of the over-65 population, down from 3.2% in 2011.
(The decline may reflect a trend toward staying at home longer or delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.)

The Rising Cost of Care

Care costs are increasing rapidly, particularly for private clients:

Care home fees rose by around 10% between 2023 and 2024.
Local authorities paid average increases of:
- +9.6% for home care
- +10.1% for residential care (65+)
- +9.6% for nursing care (65+)

For private clients, the costs are significantly higher:

Average weekly nursing care fee:
- Local authority: £1,146
- Private client: £1,409
- Difference: £263 more
Average residential care fee:
